Summary

The Director of Systems Engineering leads the team responsible for ensuring the reliability, scalability, and security of Intellum’s platform. They define and execute the technical vision for system operations, monitoring, and automation while improving the tools and infrastructure that enhance developer productivity. This role is hands-on, overseeing system architecture, guiding technical strategy, and collaborating across departments to align engineering efforts with company objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Define and implement the technical vision for operating, monitoring, and alerting across the Intellum platform, ensuring scalability, security, and alignment with the company’s growth strategy.
  • Drive innovation and efficiency by championing automation, managing infrastructure as code, and optimizing CI/CD pipelines.
  • Oversee the design and architecture of systems, ensuring they are scalable, secure, and adhere to best practices in cloud computing and DevOps.
  • Lead and mentor the systems engineering team, conducting performance assessments, providing career development guidance, and fostering autonomy and technical growth.
  • Ensure high availability and reliability of critical systems by leading incident management efforts and maintaining a robust 24x7 support system.
  • Improve developer experience by enhancing tools and infrastructure, including development environments, to increase productivity and efficiency.
  • Establish and enforce standards for coding, testing, and quality control to ensure readiness and reliability of systems engineering products.
  • Manage the subdepartment’s budget, making strategic decisions on resource allocation, tools, and infrastructure investments to maximize value and control costs.
  • Collaborate with security, development, and sales teams to ensure compliance with security policies, efficient use of cloud resources, and effective resolution of customer inquiries.
  • Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for systems engineering, proactively addressing areas for improvement and aligning technical efforts with organizational objectives.
  • Stay at the forefront of industry trends by conducting research and development, identifying opportunities for innovation, and incorporating best practices.

Required Skills

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience in engineering, DevOps, or SRE roles, demonstrating expertise in building and maintaining scalable, reliable, and secure systems.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience managing systems engineering, SRE, or DevOps teams, fostering mentorship and career growth.
  • Proven expertise in system architecture, performance optimization, and security for complex SaaS-based environments, ensuring long-term scalability and efficiency.
  • Proficiency in cloud computing (AWS/GCP), Linux administration, and infrastructure automation (Docker/Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines).
  • Hands-on experience with incident response, troubleshooting complex system failures, and contributing to architecture and design discussions.
  • Strong programming skills in Ruby or Python, with familiarity in agile development and DevOps practices.
  • Excellent leadership, collaboration, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams in a remote-first culture.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with a data-driven approach to decision-making and a focus on execution and delivery.

Preferred Skills

  • Background in Learning Management Systems, learning technologies, or adult education platforms.
  • Experience managing infrastructure across multiple cloud providers (AWS and Google Cloud).
  • Proficiency in Mac OS and related operational tools.
  • Familiarity with security frameworks, compliance standards, and customer-facing technical inquiries.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent combination of experience
